Pakistan: Muslim Child Brides Snatched From Aging Husbands
News from Dawn related that two girls, aged nine and ten, have been rescued from being forced to consummate their marriages to old men in Khairpue agency, near Sukkur in Sindh province, Pakistan.
A Muslim village court, or jirga had ordered that the two girls should be married to two men, as part of a compensation (vani marriage) after an issue of "honour" amongst members of their extended family. Karo-kari is the term used in the report, which means sexual impropriety, but often refers to "honor killings".
The jirga, under the instructions of feudal leader Ghulam Mustafa Solangi had awarded 10-year old Bashiran to 50-year old Hidyatullah Solangi, and 9-year old Shakila as a wife to 58-year old Mohammad Maroof Solangi.
The girls' parents would not let their daughters be married to the old men, and went to the police, where they also sought protection for themselves. Fourteen people had been involved in trying to implement the jirga, by kidnapping the two girls on Tuesday morning.
Police arrested five of the fourteen kidnappers, but so far have not managed to arrest feudal lord Ghulam Mustafa Solangi who organised the jirga and subsequent abductions of the two children.
Hidyatullah Solangi and Mohammad Maroof Solangi, the two aging would-be husbands had been putting pressure on the girls' parents to hand over the young girls for marriage.
A court in Pir Jo Goth ordered that the girls be taken to a place of safety, a Darul Aman or "abode of peace", where they would be out of reach of the two pedophiles and their associates in the jirga.
Usually I include details of such cases from Pakistan's Daily Times, but since they have demanded registration to view their articles, which I have done, I appear to be denied access to their archives.

If you need a proxy researcher. One that is not banned, will be happy to get the info for you. I was able to sign in without a problem to the Daily Pakistan times. Went looking at the July 4th, 5th, and 6th archive but did not see any reference to the report for Khaipur.

Thank you David
That is very kind of you. If I cannot get access to their articles (I have sent emails to them) I may email you with the http address of specific articles on vani, or honor killings.
Hopefully I can resolve the issue without having to bother you.
Kind regards
Giraldus
PS - I have just subscribed again, using my other mail address, and have been accepted, so I can continue producing articles using info from that site. I am currently researching the planned repeal of the sharia-based Hudood Ordinances, and the Daily Times was quite good at reporting the current disputes this has engendered.
