UK: Muslim Bomber Video Released On Eve Of 7/7 Anniversary
The image at left is the face of Shehzad Tanweer, looking totally unlike the images of him as a fresh-faced schoolboy. His "beard" makes him look sleazy. But this is a from a video which was released by Al Jazeera to coincide with the first anniversary of 7/7, where 52 people died and hundreds more were maimed and injured. Tanweer himself killed 7 people near Aldgate Tube station when he detonated his rucksack, containing 2 kilograms of TATP (triacetone triperoxide).
The video was presented like the one of Mohammed Siddique Khan, which was released in parts last September, with more disclosed in November. At the end of this current video, Ayman Zawahiri, the second in command of Al Qaeda, praised Tanweer, and made much of his love of cricket and sports.
News is found on the BBC and the Guardian, as well as the Times and other sources.
The appearance of Zawahiri on the tape appears to confirm suspicions that Al Qaeda were directly involved in the London bombings. Tanweer is filmed in front of the same cloth backing as Khan. A Channel 4 video report can be found here. Zawahiri also gave a eulogy on Khan's video.
This video differs only slightly to the Khan video, as it shows images of the chemicals apparently used to create the TATP at an apartment in Alexander Grove, Leeds.
Tanweer states: "What you have witnessed now is only the beginning of a string of attacks that will continue and become stronger." Like the Khan video, Tanweer states that similar attacks will continue "until you pull your forces out of Afghanistan and Iraq."
The video bears the "al-Sabah" logo, the mark of Al Qaeda. It also shows a bomb being detonated, perhaps as a test. American Adam Gadahn, also known as Azzam al-Amriki, appears on the video. Gadahn is thought to be Al Qaeda's propaganda director.
Tanweer and Khan had travelled to Pakistan before the attacks and it is probable that the video was filmed there. Tanweer is thought to have attended an extremist madrassa in Lahore. It has been suggested that in Pakistan, he met a leader of Jaish-e-Muhammad, which has been linked to al-Qaida.
One thing has never been explained adequately. How did Tanweer end up with $190,000 left in his estate after his death, when he had been jobless? Did Al Qaeda pay him?
