Internet: Bin Laden Issues More Warnings
From his foxhole, which is believed to be on the border with Afghanistan and Pakistan, Bin Laden has been busy making statements. Yesterday, an audio message was posted on a website known to host Islamist material, and was later verified by US officials as authentic, his fourth message this year.
News on Friday's message comes mainly from Associated Press via sources such as JournalStar, Santa Babara Newspress, but also the Times and the International Herald Tribune.
In yesterday;s message, Bin Laden is said to sound tired, but he praises the Jordanian killer Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, who was killed on June 7. Bin Laden even resorted to employing rhyming couplets to eulogise the leader of "Al Qaeda of the Two Rivers", the beheader of untold civilians from Iraq and beyond.
Bin Laden called Zarqawi "a lion of Islam and jihad who does honour not just to his family and tribe but to the whole of mankind....Al-Zarqawi's story will live forever with the stories of the nobles, so don't cry over one who is not missing. He can teach the world a lesson on how to seize freedom....and how to resist tyrants."
"Even if we lost one of our greatest knights and and princes, we are happy that we have found a symbol for our great Islamic nations, one that the mujahedeen will remember and praise in poetry and in stories secretly and aloud."
For some reason, Bin Laden seemed upset that the terrorist's body has not been released, and that Jordan has so far not given official permission for him to be buried in his native soil. Jordan has expressed opposition to such an action, as his grave would become a pilgrimage venue for terror-groupies. Muslims believe that a body must be buried as soon as possible, and further believe that cremating a body would deny the soul a chance to reach heaven. As a psychological warning to future terrorists, it would seem appropriate to cremate Zarqawi's carcass.
Addressing Jordan, he said: "What scares you about Abu Musab after he's dead? You know that his funeral, if allowed to happen, would be a huge funeral showing the extent of sympathy with the mujahideen."
Bin Laden promised that he would be mounting more attacks in the Middle Eats and Africa, stating: "We will continue to fight you and your allies everywhere, in Iraq, Afghanistan, Somalia and Sudan, to run down your resources and kill your men until you return defeated to your nation."
Analysts noted that as well as sounding breathy and fatigued, Bin Laden did not appear to know the name of Zarqawi's successor, Sheikh Abu Hamza al-Muhajir (al-Masri). He only stated: "The banner has not fallen, it has only been passed from one lion to another."
"We will continue, God willing, to fight you and your allies everywhere in Iraq and Afghanistan and in Somalia and Sudan until we waste all your money and kill your men.'
Last night, the same Islamist website stated that Bin Laden was preparing another announcement, in which he would mention Somalia and Iraq. This promise was kept.
Today, another audio message from Bin Laden was released on the same website, states Agence France Presse via News.com.au, Associated Press via Wral.com, Pravda and the Telegraph, in which Bin Laden sounded more defiant. The audi message, 19 minutes long, was accompanied by a picture of Bin Laden. Below the image was the logo and name Al-Sahab. This is the media production group for AL Qaeda.
In his second message in two days, Bin Laden condemned the Shias in Iraq, claiming they wee engaged in a "genocide" against Sunnis. His statement said: "The unarmed Muslims in the Land of Two Rivers are subjected to a campaign of genocide at the hands of the gangs of grudge and treachery."
He claimed: "It is not possible that many of (the Shi'ites) violate, alongside America and its allies, (the Sunni cities of) Ramadi, Falluja, Mosul.... (and) that their areas would be safe from retaliation and harm."
Bin Laden now appeared to know the name of Zarqawi's successor. He gave al-Masri his seal of approval on the audio message.
His comments about Shias being made to pay for their alleged "genocide" became manifest today just outside Baghdad, where a massive car bomb killed at least 66 people in a market in Sadr City, a Shia stronghold, and injured at least 100 more. SOme victims' bodies were catapulted onto roofs of nearby buildings. News on the car bombing can be found in the Hindu and from Associated Press via ksdk.com, and Reuters via abc.net.au.
Reuters states that a group calling itself 'Supporters of the Sunni People' has on a website claimed responsibility for the attack today. The statement has said thay have taught the Rawafidh (Shiites) "a lesson they will not forget as long as they live.... A booby-trapped car loaded with a huge amount of highly explosive material was introduced today into the stronghold of the Mehdi Army."
The Mehdi Army is the militia controlled by Shia cleric Moqtada al-Sadr, which is based in Sadr City. The message continued, saying the bomb had been "detonated near a den where the Rawafidh meet and against patrols of the Mehdi Army disguised as police."
Whether Bin Laden and Al Qaeda of the Two Rivers (Iraq) had connived with the attack is unknown, but its timing appears more than coincidental.
Zarqawi, before getting his just desserts, had announced that women in Baghdad should be kept at home. Also today, a Sunni woman legislator, Tayseer al-Mashhadani, was kidnapped with seven of her bodyguards at a checkpoint in a Shiite area of eastern Baghdad. This may have been an act of Shiite sectarianism.
But to return to the commentary on today's audio message from Bin Laden - regarding the situation in Somalia, where today it appears that Ethiopia has sent troops to support the Interim government against the Islamist militias, he said: "We will fight (US) soldiers on the land of Somalia ... and we reserve the right to punish it on its land and anywhere possible. We warn all of the countries in the world not to respond to America by sending international troops to Somalia."
