UK: Muslim Schoolboy On Terror Charges
We reported on June 14 that two individuals had been arrested in West Yorkshire. These were 21-year old Aabid Hussain Khan of Bradford, who was apprehended at Manchester City Airport on June 6 as he arrived from a stay in Pakistan. Also arrested was a 16 year old youth from Dewsbury, who cannot be named because of his age.
The pair were suspected of involvement with the terror plot allegedly planned by the 17 individuals who were arrested in Toronto, Canada, on June 3. The pair were subequently taken to London, where they were charged on conspiracy to commit murder, under section 57 of the Terrorism Act 2000.
There were three subsequent raids on addresses in Hackney, east London, on 19 June and also one in southeast London on 20 June, in which four individuals were taken into custody. Police who arrested these men were working in conjunction with West Yorkshire Police, who had arrested Khan and the schoolboy.
Today, the Times reports that the trial of Aabid Khan, the schoolboy, and a third man, Sultan Muhammad, aged 21, officially commenced yesterday at the Old Bailey, the highest criminal court.
The three were represented in court by videolink, connected to Belmarsh prison in southeast London, where Khan and Muhammad are detained, and Feltham Young Offenders Institution in West London, where the 16 year old is being held.
The three are all charged with conspiracy to murder a person or persons unknown between March 1 2005 and June 7 2006. The three are also accused of conspiracy to cause public nuisance by use of poisons and/or explosives and to cause disruption, fear or injury under the Criminal Law Act 1977.
Khan additionally faces two charges under the 2000 Terrorism Act, those of possessing a computer hard drive and its contents, apparently for the "commission, preparation or instigation of an act of terrorism."
Sultan Muhammad is charged with possessing a CD which led to suspicion of a "potential act of terrorism."
The three individuals were remanded to remain in custody, and will reappear before the court on July 28.
