Saudi Arabia: Forty Islamists Arrested
Saudi Arabian authorities earlier mounted a crackdown against suspected Islamists, state CNN, Agence France Presse via Bangladesh's Daily Star, and Reuters. 42 Islamists have been taken into custody following raids across the country. We reported yesterday that in al-Nakhil, a suburb of Riyadh, six Islamists were killed in a dawn shoot-out with authorities. Today, the Saudi Interior Ministry stated that following yesterday's raid, 15 suspects were arrested.
In yesterday's shooting incident, a policeman was killed, and one of the suspects was wounded. A total of 17 others were injured. Earlier today, according to Saudi TV, four wanted individuals were arrested in a desert refuge in Hafr al-Baten in the east of the kingdom. One of these was an Iraqi.
Following this raid, a further nine Saudis who were said to be "involved in terrorism", linked to those in Hafr al-Baten, were also taken into custody from a nearby location.
Additionally, the ministry said that 27 others had been taken in raids stretching back to May 9. The ministry had not mentioned these arrests before, and gave no explanation for its previous silence on the matter. The 27 suspected Islamists included 24 Saudis, two Somalis and an Ethiopian.
The Jerusalem Post states that today King Abdullah II called for a greater effort to uproot extremism and militants who "threaten Islam and the entire world".
His adviser made the statement on the king's behalf, and said that there was an urgent need to soon find solutions to the problems facing the Islamic world. The statement criticised extremists who "harm the people and the culture" and urged Muslims to follow moderate Islam, and to only observe the teachings of recognised religious teachers. King Abdullah also called on Jordanians to abandon their religious differences.
