India: Two Muslims Killed In Kashmir Grenade Attack

According to Pakistan's Daily Times, in the Indian state of Jammu & Kashmir, a hand-grenade caused deaths at a Muslim religious meeting yesterday. The incident happened in Sopore, 30 miles north of Srinigar, at the home of an 80 year old Muslim dervish, Fakir Abdul Ahad.

Ahad, also known as Ahad Sahib, was addressing a crowd from the balcany of his home when the grenade was thrown. 15 people were wounded and taken to hospital, where a man and a woman died. Every day, people flock to Abad's home to seek his blessing. He is the most popular religious leader in the region, and is not known to support any political or religious faction. No group has claimed responsibility for the attack. The dervish was not hurt in the attack.

We reported on an incident which happened on Wednesday June 16 in Kashmir, when suspected Islamist militants attacked villagers of Donga, 40 miles north-east of the city of Jammu, where victims had their noses and tongues cut out, causing one elderly man to die from his wounds.

In Uttar Pradesh state, in India, earlier this week, there was conflict between Hindus and Muslims. The Daily Times and Khaleej Times, rioters torched 100 houses, and two Muslim schoolgirls were burned to death in their homes.

The incident happened on Sunday 18 June in Pratapgarh, 120 miles south of the state capital of Lucknow.

The rioting began after a Hindu village council leader, Ashish Pathak, was shot in a village market on Sunday, and the local Muslim community became targets. Muslims comprise 13% of the state's population of 166 million. More than 100 people were arrested after the rioting.

In Uttar Pradesh in May, three people were killed in Aligarh, north of the state capital, and four were killed in Lucknow in Muslim-Hindu conflicts.
