UK: Confirmation Islamists Planned 9/11 Style London Attack
The BBC reports that the US Department of Homeland Security has issued a report, dated June 16, and listed as unclassified, in which it confirms what had previously been suspicion. The report claims that Al Qaeda planned on nine occasions to mount attacks on prominent targets in the world, based on the manner of 9/11's use of hijacked planes.
One of the proposed assaults involved the large tower at Canary Wharf in London's Docklands. Such a plot has been mentioned before in late 2004, but the details were not clear. The BBC notes that in 2003, the airport at Heathrow was patrolled by armoured vehicles, following a terror alert. Whether the action to move in tanks was done in connection with this plot is unknown.
Another plot, from summer 2003, involved using stun guns disguised as camera flash units and hiding bomb components in camera bodies. Airliners, once hijacked, were to be flown into buildings on the east coast of the US, Australia, Britain and Italy.
There have been 311 possible attempts to use lasers to blind or distract pilots since November 2004, though the number of such incidents has declined. There are fears that attacks on military helicopters, as practiced in Iraq, may also happen involving commercial helicopters.
The report states that the Department of Homeland Security: "continues to receive information on terrorist threats to the US aviation industry worldwide; however, there is no recent information to suggest near-term operational planning may be under way within the United States."
