Chechnya: Islamist Rebel Leader Killed
News from Le Figaro and the BBC reports that Abdul-Kalim Sadulayev, the leader of the Chechen rebels, has been killed in the city of Argun, east of Chechnya. Sadulayev came to power following the death of Aslan Maskhadov" on March 8, 2005. Mashkadov had been killed by a single shot through his eyeball by his nephew, as Russian special forces closed in.
Sadulayev, as we reported on April 10 had, like Shamil Basalayev, a contempt for the Putin-sponsored governor of Chechnya, Ramzan Kadyrov. He then described Kadyrov as being a puppet to the Russian authorities: "They are now instructing Kadyrov, who has been expanding his network of shops selling drugs and spirits, to declare a war on narcotics. He is suddenly starting to show concern for the morals of the Chechens and for Sharia law. This absurd policy is being conducted as a result of the defeat of his bosses. It was also carried out in the former times, when the Russians suffered defeat and the national traitors who followed them lost all hope."
A brief statement on the Chechen website KavkazCenter states: "Invaders claim death of C.R.I. President Sadulayev
Russian occupation sources claim death of CRI President Abdul-Halim Sadulayev. According to invaders' and puppets' claims, Sadulayev died as a result of a firefight in the city of Argun on Saturday morning.
Ringleaders of puppet formations declared that the assassination of Sadulayev was "a big success of exceptional importance" which "will deal a severe blow" to Mujahideen.
Invaders and puppets gave no details.
No comments on this report have been received from the Chechnya side yet.

Kadyrov has stated of Sadulayev's death that it was "a severe blow" to the separatists. "The terrorists have been virtually beheaded... and they are never going to recover from it."
Ali Tagirov, the head of police in Argun, said that the body had been examined by people who knew Sadulayev, and there was "no doubt" about his identity.
According to Le Figaro, the new successor to Sadulayev has been named as Dokou Oumarov (Doku Umarov). The successor's name had been announced by Ahmed Zakayev, a Chechen "foreign affairs minister" living in London, speaking on the radio station Moscow Echo.
Sadulayev had lived in Argun, 10 miles from Grozny, and he was killed in a special operation early this morning. The operation was mounted following a tip off that a terror attack had been planned to coincide with an upcoming Group of Eight summit in St. Petersburg in July, an attempt to arrest Sadulayev was made. The forces were met with resistance, so he was killed.
According to Associated Press via Topix.net, an intelligence agent and also a police officer were killed in today's shoot-out. Ramzan Kadyrov was shown on NTV television standing over a bloody body, identified as that of Saduyev.
Apparently, Saduyev was "sold" for a mere $55. The informant was a heroin addict and needed his fix, so he had shopped his leader for the price of a dose of drugs. Kasyrov said: "We must decisively end international terrorism in the whole of the North Caucasus."
