India: Islamists Cut Off Villagers' Noses And Tongues
A brutal incident took place in Indian Kashmir, in its state of Jammu and Kashmir, on Wednesday, state Judeoscope, the Pakistan Daily Times and Asian Age.
The incident happened in a remote village called Donga in Udhampur district, near the town of Mahore, 40 miles north-east of the city of Jammu, in the mountains. Islamists killed one villager by slitting his throat, and they cut off the tongues and noses of four other villagers. They beat up several other villagers and set fire to several houses.
One man who had had his tongue and nose hacked off, 65-year-old Abdul Ahad, died hours after the attack, unable to receive proper medical treatment.
Seven to eight militants had arrived in the hamlet late on Wednesday, and had ordered all the residents to come out into the open. The villagers were then mutilated, one after another, with no reason given for the brutality.
It is suspected that the Islamists assume the villagers had acted as informers. Police state that a leading militant was killed in Donga village on April 25, following a tip-off.
The victims who were injured included three brothers and a woman.
In another incident, a grenade was thrown at a senior police officer as he left a mosque following morning prayers in the town of Bandipore, above Srinigar in the north of Jammu & Kashmir state. The policeman, Fareed Khan, four other police and two civilians were injured in the blast. One of the civilians, Muhammed Subhan Dar, subsequently died in hospital. Fareed Khan and another policemen, Javed Ahmed, are in a critical condition.
In another incident today, Ali Mohammed Magray, a politician with the Opposition National Conference, was seriously injured by gunfire as he stood at a bus terminus in Batamalloo. A police officer nearby was also shot at.
Update: In an interesting spin on this affair, the Islamist organ of the Iranian state, IRNA, pretty much quotes verbatim the AsianAge article, except for here, they title their article "Attackers cut off noses, ears of Muslims in Jammu and Kashmir", and though they acknowledge a "top militant" was arrested earlier in the village, they claim the attackers of the villagers were "unknown assailants". Once again, a neat spin to imply, once again that Muslims are victims, even when they are the ones doing the attacking.
