Canada: Muslim Cleric Threatened In Montreal
Following the arrests of 17 Canadian nationals, accused of plotting terror attacks, we reported that one mosque in Toronto had 28 of its windows smashed. Since the, there have been more mosque attacks.
Today, Associated Press via Kentucky.com reports that a Muslim imam was confronted outside of his home in Montreal by a man with a knife on Friday night.
Said Jazeri is not a moderate imam by any means and he certainly does not support non-Muslims' right to freedom of speech - he orchestrated protests against the Danish cartoons of the "prophet" Mohammed earlier this year.
Jazeri had left his mosque, the Al Qods, after midnight, accompanied by a friend. A man carrying a butcher's knife approached and said: "Do you want to die a martyr?"
The knifeman pursued Jazeri's associate down the street, and the imam called police on his cellphone. The knifeman, a 34-year old, was subsequently arrested, and was charged yesterday with armed assault, issuing threats and possessing a dangerous weapon.
Benoit Couture, a police spokesperson, said that authorities are considering classifying the incident as a hate crime. He said: "The suspect was not only running toward the guys with a weapon, he wanted to cause them harm while at the same time making hateful comments about their religion and their clothing."
There have been four attacks upon mosques in Montreal since the 17 suspected terrorists were arrested and charged with, among other things, planning to take the Ottowa parliament building in a siege and to decapitate the prime minister.
Jazeri's mosque, the Al Qods, was one of those which was attacked.
