UK: Muslim Police Are Potentially Corrupt, States Report

Today's Guardian reports on a secret report from London's Metropolitan police which concludes that Muslim police officers are more prone to become corrupt, due to their cultural and family backgrounds.

The report has caused consternation in the force's ranks, particularly among those of ethnic minorities. The report was commissioned as a response the fact that Asian (those originating from the Indian sub-continent) police officers qre ten times more likely to be on the receiving end of complaints about corruption or misconduct than their white counterparts.

The Directorate of National Standards commissioned the report, which was written by an Asian officer. It states: "Asian officers and in particular Pakistani Muslim officers are under greater pressure from the family, the extended family.... and their community against that of their white colleagues to engage in activity that might lead to misconduct or criminality."

The report stated that British Pakistanis lived in a cash-driven culture where "assisting your extended family is considered a duty", where large loans take place between family and friends.

There are about 300 Muslim officers in the Metropolitan police, out of a total of 31,000 police.

Abdurahman Jafar is the vice chairman of the legal affairs committee of the Muslim Council for Britain. Last year, he had tried to water down the terms of the Terrorism Act 2006, but here said: "We've got about 1,000 wrongful anti-terrorist arrests since 9/11 and I believe that if Muslim officers were involved in looking through that intelligence and understanding the context, we would have far greater efficiency in the police force and a far greater prosecution rate."

The chairman of the Association of Muslim Officers, Dal Babu, said: "We are gravely concerned about its contents and the message it sends to recruits and potential recruits."
