Greece: Saudis Call for Muslim Expansion in the Cradle of Western Civilization
Like many other Christian countries in the Balkans, Greece has suffered centuries of slaughter and ethnic cleansing at the hands of the Ottoman Turks. No wonder many Greeks are unhappy with calls by the Council of Europe to allow followers of the Mohammedan cult to open a mosque.
The proposed mosque in Athens' central Monastiraki district is actually a former mosque built in the 18th century during the Ottoman occupation, and it's not far from the main Greek Orthodox cathedral.
"I have no objection to a mosque in Monastiraki as long as Turkey gives the keys of Haghia Sophia to the Orthodox Ecumenical Patriarchate,'' said MP Stelios Papathemelis, referring to the main church in Constantinople (now Istanbul) which was converted into a mosque when the Turks conquered the city in 1453.
All of current-day Turkey and most of the Middle East and North Africa were once part of the Greek empire known to history as the Byzantine Empire. Most of what we today refer to as `Turkey' was once populated by Greeks. Over the centuries and into the 20th century, the Muslim Turks made every effort to massacre all the Greeks and destroy all traces of Christianity. Today, a small number of churches remain open in Istanbul, but under severe restrictions and persecution.
Now Muslims are once again bringing their jihad to the very heart of Greece, and the European Commission and some Greek politicians who are probably on the Saudi payroll are telling the Greek people to shut up and be good little lambs.
"It is our desire to create a mosque, but without creating religious opposition and fanaticism,'' said deputy education minister George Kalos recently in parliament, reported Middle East Online, a London-based news portal.
Good luck with that desire Mr Kalos! Saudi Arabia, the repressive totalitarian Muslim kingdom that promotes one of the most violent forms of Islam, has been lobbying hard for the mosque.
