Israel: Muslim Honor Killing In Broad Daylight
News from the Jerusalem Post states that Wednesday (yesterday), a man was indicted in Tel Aviv District Court for murdering his sister in a so-called "honor killing".
Muslim honor killings are increasingly common in the Palestinian community. But what marks this case is the brazenness with which the 26-year old man murdered his sister in broad daylight, in plain sight of security cameras. As he stabbed his 24-year old sister Miriam, two passers by just stood and watched, doing nothing to stop the killing taking place.
Miriam was stabbed 29 times with a 23 centimeter kitchen knife. Basel Abu-Dahal committed the murder in a parking lot of Bank Hapoalim in Ramle a fortnight ago. After killing Miriam, he sauntered off, the knife still in his hand (see picture).
Abu-Dahal's sister was found by a concerned citizen who called for help, but paramedics could not revive her. The killer was arrested not far from the scene, his clothes stained with blood, after police responded to reports of a woman being pursued by a knife-wielding man.
He admitted to police that he had stabbed Miriam to death, and gave as his reason his displeasure at the "improper way" she was raising her daughter. He said in the interview that he had acted for "honor" and claimed he was "willing to do thr time for the sake of honor."
15 honor killings were recorded by police in 2005, the Jerusalem Post states, and three of these took place in Ramle.
