India: Three Islamists Killed In Hindu Center Raid

Nagpur mapBefore dawn this morning, a white Ambassador car was seen driving in a suspicious manner in the vicinity of the Hedgewar Bhawan in Nagpur, which is the headquarters of a Hindu organisation. Nagpur is in central India, in the state of Maharashtra.

The vehicle crashed through the barrier outside the headquarters of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). Police challenged the driver of the vehicle and the three men inside began to fire on them with AK-57 rifles. The police returned fire and the three men were killed. The individuals were found with three assault rifles and 120 rounds of ammunition, and a "tiffin box". This was found to contain 5.6 kilograms of explosive material, believed to be RDX, in an improvised bomb. They also had 14 hand grenades.

The men were aged 20 to 22 years old. According to Nagpur City Police Commissioner SPS Yadav, the assailants were from "Islamic terrorist organisations". He speculated that their aim may have been to create a "hostage-like situation". The terrorists had left Patna a couple of days back, he said.

The news is carried by Hindustan Times, Yahoo News, the Turkish Press, and Sify.com.

The three Islamists had been dressed up in fake police uniforms, According to the Times of India the police in Nagpur had received a warning of a potential attack from the anti-terrorist squad in Mumbai. Inspector-general K P Raghuvanshi said one person had been interrogated, apparently from Lashkar-e-Toiba (Lashkar-e-Tayba), a group which uses terrorism to attempt to cause India's state of Jammu & Kashmir to secede. They were responsible for the attacks on Delhi on October 29, which killed 59 people.

Raghuvanshi stated: "We don't know if more LeT members are present in the state, but we are working to combat them. The Siddhivinayak temple in Mumbai and RSS headquarters in Nagpur were on the hit-list of the slain terrorists. We are taking all measures to neutralise threats."

He also said there were several intelligence reports of more terror attacks planned against a Hindu temple in Siddhivinayak in Prabhadevi.

The Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (National Volunteer Union) was established in 1925 by K. B. Hedgewar, and is the largest Hindu group in India.

Following the attack, the city of Nagpur has been placed under a state of red alert. Lodges, hotels and religious buildings have been searched and staff at exit points to the city, such as bus and train stations and the airports have been asked by police to remain vigilant.
