Philippines: Governor Injured, 2 Killed In Batangas

This news is just breaking, and though there is a possibility Islamists may have been involved, it is only speculation to suggest as much. Le Figaro announced at 3.11 GMT that the governor of Batangas province, Armand Sanchez, has been seriously injured, and his bodyguard and chauffeur have been killed.

News in some detail is only available via News Inq 7 and ABS-CBN.

At 7 pm local time, the governor was in a vehicle leaving Batangas City, which lies on the large island of Luzon, 65 miles south of Manila, when two blasts happened in his Hummer van.

The driver, Luisito Icaro, and bodyguard, Police Officer 2 Eric Landicho, were killed on the spot.

The explosions happened in quick succession. Before the first explosion, Landicho pushed Sanchez out of the vehicle when he noticed smoke issuing from the front of the vehicle. Then the car exploded, followed by a secondary blast.

Armand Sanchez was taken to the Jesus of Nazareth Hospital in Batangas City.

As far as Sanchez' political record goes, he was under several investigations for "graft", being checked by the Ombudsman. He also is reputed to be a "jueteng lord", a player of the illegal numbers game jueteng.

On March 17 this year, the leader of the Liberal Party, Franklin Drillon effectively forced Sanchez and others to resign from the party after holding an unauthorised meeting at the Manila Hotel on 2 March, where "renegade officers" had been elected.
