Mauritania: Algerian Islamists Arrested
Today, according to AKI, Mauritania's Radio Sawa reported that four Islamists suspected of involvement with an Algerian terror group were arrested.
The individuals, all Mauritanian citizens, were supposedly among those who organised terror attacks against military bases in the country. They also are thought to have had involvement in the 1998 attack on the US Embassy in Nairobi. They are alleged to be members of the Al-Qaeda linked terror entity the Salafist Group for Preaching and Combat (GSPC). GSPC refused an amnesty offered to them last year, following a national referendum in Algeria.
Since the start of April this year, Mauritania has arrested 21 individuals from GSPC.
Mauritania underwent a political coup on August 3, 2005. The leader of the country, Colonel Ely Ould Mohamed Vall has been taking the country away from some of its less savoury traditions. On May 29 he called for his countrymen to abolish slavery. There will also be a vote soon on constitutional amendments.
