UK: Muslims Planned Suicide Attacks
We asked yesterday if the individuals who were arrested on suspicion of plotting terrorism offences abroad were Muslims. The answer, almost inevitably, is yes.
Today the Times and the Daily Telegraph furnish the details which were missing yesterday, as the searches were in progress. The eight people arrested in dawn raids were all Libyan Muslims, and were apparently planning suicide attacks in Iraq. Some of those were, according to intelligence sources, themselves going to be suicide bombers.
There were 19 searches in five police areas, and involved 500 police officers. The arrested men are being detained in police stations across Greater Manchester. Some are regarded as so dangerous that the Home Office is requesting their immediate deportation.
Tahir Nasuf, 44, one of those apprehended, works for the Sanabel Relief Agency (SRA), a UK charity (No: 1083469) with an office in Levenshulme, Manchester. This organisation states that it raises money for Muslims in poor parts of the world. This is a lie.
The US Treasury on 8 February listed Tahir Nasuf, aka Tahir Nasuf, aka Tahar Nasoof aka Tahir Mustafa Nasuf to its "SDN" individuals.
NASUF, Tahir (a.k.a. NASOOF, Tahar; a.k.a. NASUF, Taher; a.k.a. NASUF, Tahir Mustafa; a.k.a. "ABU RIDA"; a.k.a. "ABU SALIMA EL LIBI"; a.k.a. "AL-QA'QA"), Manchester, United Kingdom; DOB 4 Nov 1961; alt. DOB 11 Apr 1961; POB Tripoli, Libya (individual) [SDGT]
In a statement made on the same day, the US Treasury described Nasuf thus:
Tahir Nasuf is a middle-ranking member of the LIFG. He was previously associated with senior UK-based Libyans tied to the al-Qaida-affiliated Armed Islamic Group (GIA). The GIA was designated pursuant to Executive Order 13224 on September 23, 2001. Nasuf is one of three trustees and a director of SRA.It also described the activities of Sanabel Relief Agency, which it designated as a terrorist entity.
It stated that the charity was a front for the Libyan Islamic Fighting Group (LIFG), and said the charity acted as a vehicle to transfer funds and documents overseas for the purpose of terrorist activities. The designation also was enacted against other businesses in the UK, Meadowbrook Investments Limited of Bristol, Ozlam Properties of Liverpool, Sara Properties Limited of Merseyside, which it stated acted as fronts for the LIFG.
On the same day, the US Mission to the EU announced the designation of the same individuals and groups.
Yesterday, following Nasuf's arrest, his terraced house in Fallowfield, Manchester, which he shared with his wife and four children, was guarded by police. His black Ford Mondeo had been towed away for examination.
The Chief Constable of Manchester Police, Mike Todd, whose force coordinated the operation said: "I want to reassure people that we are not talking about a direct threat to the UK. We are talking about the facilitation of terrorism overseas. That could include funding and the provision of support and encouragement to terrorists."
He added: "This is a clear demonstration of how forces are working together to tackle the threat from terrorism."
The Telegraph states that some of the evidence which led to the arrests came from a man who left Britain in June last year to become a suicide attacker in Iraq. The individual was a 41-year old French national of North African origin.
The Birmingham offices of Sanabel Relief Agency in Sparkbrook were also raided, and in one of the addresses in Manchester, police were seen carrying away computers.
