Germany: Citizens' Attitudes Hardening Against Islam
A survey carried out in Germany by the Allensbach Institute and published in the magazine Frankfurter Allgemeine has found that Germans are becoming increasingly set against Islam, states Expatica. The poll asked the same questions as a previous survey from two years ago.
91% of respondents thought that Islam oppressed women. In 2004, it was 85%.
83% thought Islam was dominated by fanaticism. In 2004, it was 75%.
71% felt Islam was intolerant. In 2004, 66% felt this way.
56% thought the "Clash of Civilisations" had already started. In 2004 it was 46%.
The survey also asked if strict limits should be imposed upon Islam in Germany, and nearly half (40%) concurred.
Germans were asked if building of mosques should be forbidden in their nation, while some Islamic states refused permission for churches to be built. Again, more than half (56%) agreed.
More than half (61%) of the respondents agreed that there would perpetually be "major conflict between both faiths".
The pollsters concluded: "If one looks at this from a pessimistic viewpoint it could be seen as the start of a downward spiral toward conflict...The clash of civilizations has already begun in the minds of citizens."
Meanwhile, the first mosque to be planned for East Berlin has encountered stiff opposition, states Islam Online. In the East Berlin suburb of Pankow-Heinersdorf, the municipal council approved construction of the mosque in April. But at a residents' meeting in late March to protest the mosque, there was uproar. Shortly after the packed meeting, a residents' committee was formed. The mosque's trustees have not yet laid a single stone on the site.
The largest mosque in Germany is the Sehitlik in West Berlin. There are about 30 mosques in West Berlin, mostly in Kreuzberg and Neukoelln. The suburb of Neukoelln is notorious as the location of the school where Muslim pupils refuse to be taught by women teachers, and police had to posted to quell the lawlessness within the institution.
The first mosque in Berlin was built in 1924, and the first mosque in Germany was one constructed in Potsdam in the 16th Century by Frederick William I of Prussia, for the convenience of his Turkish soldiers.
3.4 million Muslims live in Germany, with two thirds of these coming from Turkey.
