Denmark: Nine Pakistanis On Trial In Muslim Honor Killing
We reported on September 27 last year that a woman and her Afghan husband were shot in a public street. Though her husband survived, the young Pakistani woman died from her injuries. The incident was captured on film (see picture), and shocked the nation. The man who shot the couple was the woman's older brother.
Now, according to Pakistan's Daily Times and The News and All Headline News, nine Pakistanis from the woman's family and their associates have gone on trial yesterday (Monday 15).
The shooting incident took place in the road outside Slagelse train station, west of Copenhagen, in broad daylight. The woman, Ghazala Khan, was shot with two bullets to the heart by her 29-year old brother. The brother insists that the incident was "accidental", and that he had no intention of killing his sister.
The prosecution states firmly that the killing was an example of "honor killing", the ninth case in the past decade. Ghazala had married her Afghan husband in secret, and without her parents' consent. The prosecution states that this marriage was said to have tarnished the family's "honour".
Those accused include the brother who perpetrated the attack, her father and four other members of her family, and three family friends.
The trial is being conducted under strict security. It is expected to conclude next month.

In separate news, the Jerusalem Post reports that Denmark's foreign minister, Per Stig Moeller, said earlier today that his country was not "Islamophobic" despite its negative portrayals in Muslim media, following the publication of cartoons of the so-called prophet Mohammed.
He said: "We are definitely not the nation of xenophobic, Islamophobic, Koran-burning, morally corrupt heathens that part of the international and Arabic media has portrayed us as over the past few months."
