Australia: Islamist Books Allowed, While Bibles Are Banned

The bizarre state of the "Free World" showed itself in reports today from Australia's Sunday Times (Monday edition!), and Nine MSN News which state that books promoting violent jihad have been allowed to be sold in New South Wales, Australia.

The Australian Federal Police (AFP) and the Commonwealth Director of Public Prosecutions ruled that books which had been found in Islamic bookstores in the Lakemba and Auburn suburbs of Sydney last year did not incite violence.

According to AFP spokeswoman Rebecca Goddard, the volumes were not in breach of the Commonwealth Criminal Code or the New South Wales Crime Act 1900. According to her, the books were judged "relative to the time the books were written and the fact that some of the material could be described as descriptive, rather than inciting any type of violence". She said: "No action will be taken by the AFP against individuals who possess copies of the 'books of hate' or sell them."

Philip Ruddock, Australia's Federal Attorney general, apparently accepts the ruling, according to a spokeswoman from his office who said: "The test is, does it advocate the use of force or violence, and on this occasion the AFP and NSW Police with the DPP have deemed the material does not."

One of these books, called Defence of the Muslim Lands had on its back cover an endorsement from Osama bin Laden, and advocated that a person should be "wiring up one's body" with explosives, for the purpose of "martyrdom or self-sacrifice operations".

Another book, called The Criminal West, claimed that it was a matter of shame to be called an Australian, and said Western culture is a culture of wolves, injustice and racism. The author is an "Australian" Muslim called Omar Hassan, who also claims that Australian police are rapists and attackers of young boys, and says there is a campaign to turn Muslims into drug addicts.

A book entitled The Ideological Attack states that Jews, Christians and atheists are mounting a barbaric onslaught against Muslims.

An audio tape which was found on sale, called Da'wah in the West includes a speech by Ali al-Tamimi. This character was jailed for life in the US last year for soliciting others to wage war.

The Islamic Bookstore, based in Lakemba, refused to rule out stocking more of these books for sale.

NSW Police Commissioner Ken Moroney claimed he felt uneasy about the books being available, but said that his police force would abide by the legal advisements of the AFP and the Commonwealth Director of Public Prosecutions.

And while these highly offensive and "un-Australian" books are deemed to be legal and acceptable, the state of Victoria, home to one of the largest Muslim communities in Australia, has decided to remove all copies of the free Gideon Bibles from its hospitals, because they may offend non-Christians. According to News.com.au, Melbourne's diocese of Catholic bishops denounced the decision. Auxiliary bishop Christopher Prowse said: "To say that other faiths might be offended if a Bible is there is nonsense."

The only hospital to still retain Bibles at bedsides is the Catholic institution, St Vincent's. The Austin has a Bible in each ward.

A spokesman for the Royal Melbourne hospital said disingenuously that there were no Bibles in his hospital because "Because we have so many people from different religious backgrounds it is considered inappropriate. It is also an infection control measure."

The Gideon Society also states that several secondary schools had refused to accept their offers of free Bibles.
