Pakistan: Child Strangled To Thwart Muslim Council Verdict

In Karachi, Pakistan, a jirga, or Muslim council was formed to assess what should be done about the kidnapping of a girl five months ago. The 15-year old girl had been abducted from the family home in a south Karachi suburb. Her father is a widower rickshaw driver, who originally came from northern Pakistan, where tribal justice is traditionally meted out by a jirga, or Muslim council of elders.

The father, Saeed Akbar, agreed to this jirga being convened, states the Pakistan Daily Times. The jirga was held, and it ordered that the family who had snatched the girl for marriage should repay in kind. They ordered that a daughter of this family should be given in a vani marriage to the abducted girl's brother, 11-year old Muhammad Asif.

The father seems to have accepted that his 11 year old son should be married, but after the decision of the jirga was given, the other family began to issue threats.

Saeed Akbar returned to the jirga to seek some protection from the family. He said: "But before that, they killed my innocent son in revenge." He saw smoke coming from his home shortly after he had left for work. He continued: "I rushed back and found the house was on fire. I called for help and we took out Asif's dead body."

The charred body of the child was taken for autopsy, where it was confirmed that he had been strangled before being burned.

A police spokesperson said that three brothers and a woman (from the other family) are being hunted, accused of the child's murder.

According to Dawn, the child was aged 13. The name of the man accused of abducting Muhammad Asif's sister is Siddiq. Those accused of the child's murder are Siddiq, two of his brothers and his wife. The boy was strangled late on Saturday night (May 6).
