UK: Muslim Honor Killing In London

Once again, British justice is having to deal with the fallout of Muslim male pride, in another case of honor killing. On Saturday 23 April, 2005, the body of 25 year old recruitment consultant Samaira Nazir was found at Abbotts Road in Southall, West London. She had suffered multiple injuries, being stabbed eighteen times. She had also had her throat slit.

According to the Ealing Times and the BBC, two women and a youth aged 16 were arrested. The women were aged 56 and 17. They were given bail and then made to report to police stations on Monday 22 August 2005. They were then released without charge. The youth was remanded in custody. A 61-year old man was also bailed to return to a separate West London police Station on August 15, but could not attend on grounds of ill-health.

On Tuesday 16 August, a 29-year old greengrocer, Azar Nazir, was charged with Samaira's murder, as was the youth.

Now, according to the BBC and Newswatch, the trial of Azar Nazir and the youth who, being 17, is too young to be named legally, is underway at the Old Bailey in London.

It has been stated by the prosecution that the reason that Samaira was killed was because she had asked her family if she could marry a man from Afghanistan. This fell foul of the family's desire to have Samaira married within their Pakistani family circle.

The object of Samaira's affections was an asylum seeker, Salman Mohammed. He had arrived in the UK smuggled in a lorry in 2000. Shortly after that, he became a friend of her brother Azhar. Azhar helped him to get lodgings and find employment. He and Samaira began a relationship, which was kept secret. In 2004, Samaira was taken to Pakistan to view potential husbands, but rejected them all.

Sally Howes, the prosecutor told how the situation reached "crisis point" when Samaira mentioned in January 2005 that she wished to marry Salman Mohammed. This caused her brother to react angrily. Ms Howes said: "It would appear she lost her life for loving the wrong man."

Neighbours had heard screams coming from the house in Abotts Road, and saw Samaira, covered in blood, trying to escape out of the front door, before she was pulled by her hair back into the hallway. Shortly after this, an emergency call was made from the house, and a man told the operator he had killed Samaira.

Both Azhar Nazir and the 17 year old, who is a cousin of Samaira, were stained with blood when police arrived.

Ms Howes states that Azhar Nazir is stating in his defence that he did not take part in the stabbing. The 17 year old has accepted that he carried out the killing, but is claiming "diminished responsibility".

Samaira's father apparently wanted her to marry into the same caste of family as himself, and he threatened the couple that he would track them down and kill them, no matter where they fled to.

The trial is continuing.

What is so sad about this and similar cases is how it highlights how so many Muslim immigrants come to Britain, and claim to be British citizens with all the rights that citizenship brings, but they are unable to leave behind the backward ways of their home cultures. When in Rome, do as the Romans do.....
