US: Texas Mosque Attacked
News from My San Antonio relates that a mosque in San Antonio, Texas, has been burgled and vandalised.
Yesterday the mosque on Hayes Street in the East Side was found to have been trashed, with paper towels, ribbons strewn about the building, with a pillar base wrapped in aluminium foil. A safe had been overturned, and money had been taken. A donation box had its cash contents removed, though checks remained inside. Chairs were set up as if for an audience, and on one of the walls was the graffiti of a pentagram, as well as gang-symbols.
The imam, Sadeeq Mateen, was remarkably composed about the incident. He said: "It's comical on one side; on another point it's serious, based on the tags on the wall."
He continued: "I'm confused if it's a message. If it's a message, they need to be more clear. Maybe come back again when we're open, actually, and give us a clear message on what's going on. Maybe we can sit down, come to an understanding."
Because of the pentagram, the incident is being treated as a hate crime by police. About one hate crime a month occurs in San Antonio. In 2004, there were 24 hate crimes reported, half of these being based on race, with 13% considered to be religion-based.
