Bangladesh: Islamist Politicians Sued For Defrauding Bank
The Jamaat-e-Islami is one of the four parties in Bangladesh's coalition government. This group seeks to see Bangladesh throw out its commitment to democracy and to become an Islamist state. Its leader, Motiur Rahman Nizami, killed Hindu and intellectual Bangladeshis during the country's fight for independence in 1971. As we mentioned yesterday, the Jamaat-e-Islami and its student wing, the Islami Chhatra Shibir have had links with the terrorist group Jama'atul Mujahideen Bangladesh, or JMB, which similarly seeks to establish a sharia-based state.
The Bangladesh Daily Star reports that three local leaders of the Jamaat-e-Islami party have now been sued for defrauding the Islami Bank of 1,600,000 taka (US$ 23,800). The three are leaders of upazilas (boroughs) in Sirajganj district, which is located in central Bangladesh, above Dhaka.
As soon as charges were made against them, the three Jamaat-e-Islami leaders went into hiding.
The three are accused of defrauding the Sirajganj district branch of the Islami bank when they took out a loan in the name of a firm on November 2, 1996, but did not repay this loan. Setaur Rahman, an official at the Islami bank is also accused of fraud.
On a cell phone, one of the Jamaat accused, 50-year old A. B. M. Abdus Sattar, said that they were trying to repay the money.
