Egypt: Scandinavian Striptease Shocks Muslim Faithful
A story from Sweden's The Local and Norway's Aftenposten describes how a group of three Swedes and two Norwegians decided to have some fun at the expense of Muslim propriety. The men, aged 30 to 40, were part of a group of Scandinavians holidaying in Hurghada, a resort in Egypt.
Hurghada has a bizarre statue of a mermaid (pictured), with scallop shells stuck to her breasts. The five individuals had been drinking, and decided to take the micky out of Muslim mores. They dressed up like Muslim pilgrims, and went to the Hughada town square, location of the mermaid statue. They began to dance around the statue, saying "Allah, we obey you" to the topless idol.
This action brought the interest of locals, but when the men thought it would be fun to take their clothes off, the situation turned ugly, and the locals attacked. The men had to be rescued by police.
"If they hadn't been arrested, they probably would have been lynched," a Muslim expert told Sweden's Aftonbladet newspaper. The men were initially charged with indecent conduct, as some of the men had exposed themselves as part of their striptease.
Then the charges were changed to blasphemy. Eventually it was decided that the men should be released, and the men were put on a plane and sent home.
The newspaper Svenska Dagbladet said the men had been very drunk and were on their way to a toga party.
