Italy: Search Warrants Against Eighteen Islamic Jihad Suspects
News from Italy's AGI reports that Bologna prosecutor's office has issued search warrants against eighteen individuals suspected of assisting the Palestinian terror group, Islamic Jihad.
The 18 individuals are all Tunisian nationals. This morning, thierteen searches were carried out in Bologna province, in the neighbourhoods of Casalecchio di Reno, Imola, Budrio and Marzabotto. Two more searches were made in Palmi. Three searches were not made, as the three individuals are now on the run. One search was not made because the individual appears to have moved house.
Felsinea prosecutors have suggested that the individuals being investigated today were placed on a register as they were investigated previously in 2002. These individuals were investigated as members of terror groups with links to Islamic Jihad, who were suspected of recruiting people to send to terror training camps.
Elsewhere, AGI states that the searches mentioned above may, according to leaks, be related to terror attacks which were thwarted by the Carabineiri (police) on the eve of the general election which took place on April 9 and 10. These attacks were to have been made upon the Milan underground (subway) and the church of Saint Petronius in Bologna, according to Italy's interior minister Guiseppe Pisanu.
As we reported on April 21, the Bologna Cathedral of Saint Petronius is noted for its 15th century frescoes by Giovanni da Modena, which include an image of "Mahomet" in Hell, illustrating the allusion made by Dante in his Divine Comedy. A previous attempt by five fanatical Muslims to attack the Modena fresco was made in August, 2002. Before that, another Muslim attempt to destroy the fresco was foiled in June, 2002.
