UK: Islamist Suspect To Be Extradited To Spain

News from AKI reports that a man who is suspected of involvement with the bomb attacks which took place in Madrid on Thursday 11 March, 2004, which cost the lives of 191 people and wounded 1,755 people, has lost his appeal against extradition today.

40-year old Syrian-born Moutaz Almallah Dabas is a Spanish citizen, who had been arrested in Britain on March 19, 2005. He was at his home in Slough, Berkshire when police descended with an international arrest warrant. His brother Mohannad Almallah Dabas had been arrested 24 hours previously in Madrid.

According to the Spanish interior ministry, the two brothers had assisted in the running of an apartment in Madrid where militants who had al-Qaeda ambitions had been recruited. In this apartment, texts extolling al Qaeda and written by Osama bin Laden were utilised to further radicalise these recruits. The Dabas brothers' activities directly led to the recruitment of those who took part in the multiple bomb attacks upon trains in Madrid, Bow Street Magistrates Court had been told on March 21, 2005.

The international arrest warrant specified that Moutaz Almallah Dabas "provided care for radical Islamists in Spain, being a tenant of an address in Madrid where such persons were housed and trained."

At London's High Court today, Moutaz Almallah Dabas claimed that if he should be sent back to Spain, his human rights would be violated. The court rejected this argument.

More than 100 people have been arrested so far in the investigations into the Madrid train bombings. Judge Juan del Olmio has the unenviable task of sifting through mountains of evidence to indict suspects from amongst the host of individuals charged, analysing reams of documentation. Last month, Judge del Olmio charged 29 people with involvement in the attacks on April 11. The trials are not expected to begin for at least a year, probably two.
