Saudi Arabia: Drunk Driver Smashes Into Grand Mosque
The Arab News reports that on Sunday (April 30), a car careered through the traffic-control barricade surrounding the Grand Mosque in Mecca, home of the sacred ka'abah stone. The vehicle ended up in the mosque courtyard, injuring four worshippers who were in its path. These worshippers, some with fractures, were immediately rushed to hospital.
The driver tried to flee, but was surrounded by security officers, who arrested him. He was subjected to tests, which ascertained that he was under the influence of alcohol.
The future for this man, who has breached Saudi Arabia's strict policy of banning all comsumption of alcohol, not to mention injuring worshippers in the holiest place of worship in Mecca, will be dire indeed.
On March 15, AKI reported that the desperation of some people in Saudi Arabia to find alcoholic refreshment has led to deaths. In Mecca, Taif, Medina and Riyadh, 20 people had died from drinking cologne, and another 40 people were in hospital, some in a critical condition. The toxic cologne had been sold in large quantities, and Saudi authorities were trying to recover the batch. It is apparently common in the kingdom for people to drink cologne to get tipsy.
