Thailand: Muslim Insurgency Claims Two More Victims

News from the Bangkok Post describes more killings in Thailand's south, which according to police are being carried out by Muslims extremists. Many of the recent victims of the violence in the southern provinces are Muslims themselves, believed by the separatist insurgents to be collaborators.

The insurgents wish to see the provinces of Narathiwat, Payyani and Yala secede from Thailand. These formerly comprised an independent Muslim sultanate called Pattani, which became annexed by Thailand a century ago.

One of the people killed yesterday (Sunday 30 April) was a Muslim who appears to have been killed less because it was believed he was a "collaborator" with the Thai authorities, but because he was deemed to be a poor example of a Muslim.

The man, 24-year old Abdulragif Awae had just been released from hospital, where he had been undergoing treatment and rehabilitation in the neighbouring province of Pattani for drug addiction. About 8 pm yesterday evening, in Muang district, Narathiwat province, two men on a motorcycle approached. The pillion rider shot Abdulragif twice from behind, killing him. He was barely 500 metres from his home when he was killed.

In Sungai Padi district, further south in Narathiwat, Sabueri Lue-ngi, aged 21, was riding home from his job at the district railway office. According to witnesses, Sabueri was driving along the Sungai Padi/Sago road, a gunman on another motorcycle stopped, dismounted and then shot at him. Sabueri was shot in the back and in the stomach, and died in the road.

The death toll from the separatist insurgency, which began in February 2004, has now reached at least 1,200.
