Spain: Judge Visits Islamist Suspect In Morocco

Judge Juan del OlmoJudge Juan del Olmo (pictured), who is currently presiding over the indictments of individuals who will stand trial for the Madrid train bombings on March 11 2004, has visited a suspect in Morocco, states EFE and Expatica. The Madrid train bombings, in which 10 nearly simultaneous blasts, triggered by cellular phone, ripped through four raliway carriages, killed 191 people, and injured 1,755 people.

Judge del Olmo went to a jail in Sale, near the capital Rabat, to question Mimoun Belhadj. He is the brother of Youssef Belhadj, who is indicted in the Madrid bombings case. Youssef is a suspected member of the Groupe Islamique Combattant Marocain (GICM), who had fled to Belgium after the bombings, where he was arrested on 1 February last year.

The Judge's visit to Mimoun Belhadj was carried out with the cooperation of the Moroccan authorities. He visited, with Moroccan judges, as part of an international tribunal.

Mimoun Belhadj was extradited to Morocco from Syria, and is currently serving a two-year sentence for terrorism offences. He too is believed to be a member of GICM, and had fled to Belgium with his brother after the Madrid blasts.

According to an earlier report, Mimoun Belhadj is aged 34, and was residing in Sint-Jans-Molenbeek in Belgium. He is in jail in Morocco because of his involvement with the multiple bombings which took place in Casablanca on 16 May 2003, in which 45 people were killed and dozens wounded.

According to Angola Press, Judge del Olmo was accompanied on his visit to interrogate Mimoun Belhadj by Olga Sanchez, a Spanish State Prosecutor.

Judge del Olmo is expected to travel to France to interrogate another suspect.
