Book Review: The Socialist Phenomenon

'Christianity' has been in the news. I write 'Christianity', because what has been in the news is the ancient heresy of Gnosticism, which has little to do with Christianity, and a lot to do with Socialism[1]. Also in the news is The Da Vinci Code, a book written on the premise that ancient Gnosticism is 'real' Christianity, and The Gospel of Judas, a Gnostic text from the late 2nd century A.D. Christianity itself has been on trial in the public square.

What is this Gnosticism? According to Igor Shafarevich[2], Gnosticism is an ancient form of religious Socialism. The Christianity in such doctrines never goes beyond a thin disguise. (It is very telling the much-publicized Gospel of Judas does not concern itself with the passion and ressurrection of Jesus, the core of Christianity proper.)

Shafarevich did not restrict himself to Gnosticim, he wrote a book, The Socialist Phenomenon, in which he surveys and analyzes Socialism in its many incarnations through the ages.

This book is very important for those of us wishing to understand the West's weaknesses in its fight with Islam. It explains, without wishing to do so, the slow-motion demographic suicide of Europe. Choosing not to have children is a common human response to Socialism, from ancient Sparta, to the Jesuit state of Paraguay, to present-day Socialist Europe and Communist Cuba. With the importance of understanding our weaknesses, Shafarevich's book might be as important as the works of Bat Ye'or are to understanding Islam[3].

Notes:

[1] Full disclosure: two of Western Resistance's authors are Christians. I am not one of them.

[2] Igor Rostislavovich Shafarevich is a world-class Russian mathematician. He wrote his criticisms of Socialism from within the Soviet Union, for which he was persecuted. A heroic man.

[3] (Joke alert.) For me to say that something, anything, 'is as important as the works of Bat Ye'or', is a shocking heresy, and I don't know how to deal with the guilt now that I've said it.
