Russia: Jihadists Threaten Mayhem in Republic of North Ossetia

CaucasusA Muslim group in the predominantly Christian republic of North Ossetia in Russia's North Caucasus region has ordered the local government to accept parts of Islamic Sharia law, reports the Russian web newspaper, Newsru, citing Kavkaz Center, the Chechen rebel news agency.

If its demands are not met, then the group, Ossetian Jamaat, threatens to attack casinos, drug dealers, places that distribute alcohol, and night clubs, as well as those people who frequent such places.

On February 1, a wave of attacks against two casinos in Vladikavkaz, the North Ossetian capital, killed two and injured 20. One of the dead was a 26 year old doctor, Madina Dzhotsieva, who rushed to help those injured by the first wave of bombs. Ossetian Jamaat claimed responsibility for those attacks.

Most Ossetians are nominally Christian, though since the end of the Soviet Union and the religion freedom that followed, few have returned to the faith of their ancestors. The five per cent of the population that historically followed the brutal 7th century Arabian warlord, Mohammed, have returned to the faith of their ancestors with a vengeance and a desire to wage jihad. North Ossetia is surrounded by Muslim republics, and for centuries these Muslim peoples have slaughtered Ossetians, trying to force them to join the Mohammedan cult.

The most recent serious Islamic offensive came on 1 September 2004, when Chechen, Ingush and Ossetian Muslims drove up to a school in Beslan, North Ossetia, and took its approximate 1200 children, parents, and staff hostage for 60 hours. Then, in circumstances that are still unclear, they began to blow up the school and shoot the children and other hostages. About 360 hostages perished, while 32 Muslims were killed by federal and local troops. Some Muslims are believed to have escaped, and now form the basis of the newly created Ossetian Jamaat.

The Beslan hostages later told Western Resistance that the Muslims who took over the school prayed to the blood-thirsty Islamic moon deity, Allah, five times a day, and often invoked his name as a justification for what they were doing. Such information, however, never shows up in Russian and international press reports.

Ossetian surival today is only thanks to the presence of Russian troops in the republic. Without them, the local jihadists, with help from their brothers from neighboring countries, would unleash a bloodbath.
