Copts Demonstrate in Athens Near Egyptian Embassy
Several hundred Copts resident in Athens demonstrated outside of the Egyptian embassy today (April 20) to protest attacks against their fellow believers in Egypt by Muslim gangs. Last weekend, two Copts were murdered by Muslims who attacked their church in Alexandria. The peaceful crowd in Athens demanded that Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak guarantee the safety and liberties of the Coptic community, reported Russian state news agency, RIA Novosti.
Egypt's Copts number about 8 million, compared to a population of 72 million occupying Muslims. While the Copts account for 10 per cent of the population, this figure makes them the largest Christian community among the Middle East nations that are still occupied by followers of the 7th century warlord, Mohammed.
Before the Mohammedan invasion, Egypt, like most of the Middle East, was Christian, and was part of the Greek Byzantine Empire, the most advanced civilization on the earth at that time. With the Islamic invasion, the country entered a dark age from which it has never recovered. Christians were slaughtered or forced to convert, churches were destroyed, and the famous ancient library at Alexandria was torched since righteous Muslims have no need for learning and education aside from memorizing the Koran and other `sacred' Muslim texts.
The Copts consider themselves descendants of the original ethnic Egyptians of Antiquity, as opposed to Muslim Egyptians who are for the most part descendants of the 7th century occupying Arab forces. As other eastern Christian communities, the Copts celebrate Easter this Sunday.
