Thailand: Muslim Killings Continue

The insurgency in Thailand, which began in January 2004, and has since claimed more than 1,100 lives, is showing no signs of abating. Originally, commentators claimed that the insurgency was being led by criminals and Muslim separatists, though those comments have faded as the situation progresses.

The southern provinces of Narathiwat, Pattani and Yala, as well as two districts of Songkhla province were formerly part of an independent sultanate called Pattani. This sultanate was invaded by Thailand, and officially became annexed into Thailand a century ago. In these regions, the population is 80% Muslim, and only 20% Buddhist.

The separatists who are mounting the insurgency wish for the former territory of Pattani to secede from Thailand to create an independent Muslim nation.

Unfortunately for many of the Muslims living in these regions, they are currently as likely to become targets of the insurgents as non-Muslims. Those killed are often people with a sense of public or civil responsibility, and are deemed by their assailants to be "collaborators".

Today, the Bangkok Post reports that two more Muslims have been shot dead, and police believe that separatist insurgents are their killers.

Earlier today, a Muslim fruit grower was shot dead in Narathiwat province. 64-year old Abdulloh Mayusoh was tending his orchard in tambon Paluru in Sungai Kolok district, when gunmen approached. He was shot five times and died instantly.

In Yala province, a Muslim man was shot dead as he went home. following afternoon prayers at his local mosque. The incident happened in Tanoh Putae, Bannang Sata district. 53-year old Mala Heng was ambushed and shot in the body, causing him to die instantly.

I hope somebody writes a book about the situation in Thailand. Most people do not even know there is a terrorist insurgency in Thailand.
