Singapore: Muslim Father Pleads Guilty To Raping Daughters

We mentioned earlier that a Muslim man in Singapore was accused of raping six of his daughters. He has 66 offspring, as a result of his exploitation of a Muslim marriage custom called Mut'ah, which is described as "marriage for pleasure".

The practice of Mut'ah marriage is primarily a Shiite custom, which is legal in Iran and some other Muslim countries. Effectively, it means that a man who fancies a woman sets up a short term contract with her, so that he can have sex for a short period, without being guilty of fornication or adultery. Mizyah marriage is similar, but does not have a fixed "end of contract". If he likes the woman, he can continue in marriage.

The 45 year old man, stout with greying hair and spectacles, pleaded guilty to nine charges of rape and aggravated rape, with a further 34 cases asked to be "taken into consideration".

The news is reported in Monsters & Critics, Australia's ABC News, the Daily India and DNA India. The man is well-versed in Islamic history and is fluent in Arabic, and used the Koran to justify incest. The Straits Times in Malaysia stated that the man had even convinced some of his mut'ah wives that he had ownership over his daughters, which Islamically entitled him to have sex with them.

His defense lawyers claimed that the man (who cannot be named to protect the identities of his victims) believed that by "satisfying" his daughters' sexual "needs", they would be less likely to have pre-marital sex with boys.

Between December 2003 and June 2005, hee raped five of his daughters, with the help of some of his wives. The girls were aged between 12 years and 15 years at the time their father raped them. Two went on to get pregnant, and had abortions.

Yesterday, deputy public prosecutor Eugene Lee told the court: "The incidents of abuse were so numerous that they (the daughters) were hard-pressed to keep count, much less remember the exact specifics of each incident."

"Instead of providing paternal love and support to the victims, he chose to systematically abuse them to satisfy his sexual desires," Lee said.

Lee told the court that the man would send one of his wives to inform a daughter that she should go to her father's bedroom. He had sex with his daughters, even when they cried out in pain. The eldest of the raped daughters went to the police on June 24, 2005. The next day, the man was arrested.

The girls are now in the care of Singapore's Ministry of Community Development. The man currently has 10 wives - four of them legally married to him under Islamic practice, and the other six as a result of Islamic "mut'ah" marriage. Neither form of polygamy is recognised by Singaporean law.

Justice Tay Yong Kwang yesterday set next Tuesday as the date for sentencing. In the laws of the city-state of Singapore, rape carries a maximum penalty of 20 years' imprisonment, with caning. The penalty for aggravated rape is eight years in prison, and 12 strokes of the cane.

The prosecution would not say whether the wives who assisted in the rape of the girls would be prosecuted.

The Muslim population of Singapore is 15% of the total demographic.

UPDATE: Further information from the Malaysia Star states that the prosecution alleged there could have been more than 43 instances of abuse. Even the rapist could not remember all the events. The man's lawyer, Harold Seet, denied that his client had been motivated by lust, and said that the incestuous rapist, who ran his own firm, had been "stressed out by having to provide for his large family." Additionally, Seet claimed, his client had found out that his daughters had been "behaving inappropriately" with boys.

A second article from the Star describes how the girls were blackmailed into allowing themselves to be raped. One mother told her 14 year old daughter that her fathers intentions were "right" and that the girl should "relax and not think too much". When the daughter resisted, the woman came close to tears.

Another mother even prepared her 14-year old daughter for sex, telling the girl to shower in the room next to her father's bedroom. When the girl knew this was a prelude to sex, she refused, but the mother told her that one of the "Prophet"'s wives sacrificed herself, which caused the girl to comply.

Another mother praised her 13 year old daughter for being a "good girl" after enduring painful sex with her father. Court documents reveal that at least four mothers connived in the incest.
