France: Two More "Muslim Barbarians" Surrender
We described earlier the case of the "Barbarians" a gang led by 26-year old Youssef Fofana (pictured), a Muslim French national originally from the Cote d'Ivoire. Styling himself as the "Brain of the Barbarians", he led the gang which employed a 17-year old schoolgirl called Yalda to seduce and entrap a 23-year old Jewish man named Ilan Halimi, who worked in a cellular phone store. Ilan agreed to meet her, and the Barbarians then abducted him, holding him hostage and torturing him for nearly three weeks.
Ilan's family were subjected to ransom demands, interspersed with quotes from the Koran, and were told that, being Jewish, they were rich enough to pay. Ilan's parents could not afford the ransom. On Monday, February 13, Ilan's naked body was discovered in the southern Parisian region of Saintee-Genevieve-des-Bois, in Essonne, Ile de la Cite. Ilan was tied to a tree, with cuts and burns caused by cigarettes and acid covering 80% of his body. He died on the way to hospital.
After Ilan's death, a number of arrests were made, mostly in the peripheral regions of Paris, and one in Belgium. Fofana fled to Cote d'Ivoire to escape justice, where he was arrested on February 23. He was then extradited, arriving back in Paris on March 4.
Today, news from Expatica and Le Monde reports that two more individuals fro the "Barbarians" gang have voluntarily surrendered themselves to police.
One surrendered on Monday, and the other on Tuesday (yesterday). The most "interesting" to investigators is Jean-Christophe S. who is aged 20 and of African origin, and nicknamed "Marc", "Crim" or "Craps". After several weeks on the run, he confessed to taking part in the abduction of Ilan Halimi. Originally from Bobigny, Jean-Christophe S. said he had been recruited in January by Fofana, whom he had met at Bagneux, in Hauts-de-Seine, in a context of a narcotics deal. Fofana had pretended that they had met in prison. Fofana had promised him 40,000 Euros ($48,478 US) for kidnapping, then releasing him, after payment of a ransom.
"Craps" maintained that the Jewish ethnicity of the victim had not been mentioned, states a source close to the inquiry. He had conducted the operation with two other men who had subdued and gagged Ilan Halimi when the young lure led him to the place arranged for their "rendezvous". They had then taken Ilan to Bagneux, to an apartment obtained by the gang, who were close to the caretaker of the block.
Jean-Christophe S. affirmed that he had not seen Ilan more than one time since his kidnap. There are two versions of Ilan's last hours. Samir Ait Abdelmalek, one of the gang, had explained that Youssef Fofana had made out that he would be solely responsible for freeing Ilan. Abdelmalek had claimed last month that Youssef Fofana had been in a panic: "With a knife, Youssouf struck him (Ilan) in the throat near the carotid vein, then gave a jab to the other side of his throat. Then he had tried to cut him at the base of the nape of his neck. Then he had stabbed him in the side", before dousing him in gasoline.
On February 23 in Cote d'Ivoire, Fofana had claimed that he had left Ilan Halimi in the custody of two men, of which one was Jean-Christophe S. The next day, he had said that: "Crim and his mate had met at Sainte-Genevieve-des Bois, where they disposed of the body in a copse, and that they had poured acid on his entire body, which they had then set on fire and it made a ball of flame."
