Germany: Surveillance Of Islamic Extremists Before World Cup

News from today's Expatica states that in Germany, more than 50 Muslims who have returned from fighting in Iraq are being kept under close surveillance, two months before the soccer World Cup takes place.

The news was first reported in Focus magazine, citing a security forces' report, and claims the individuals have been identified by the German Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution (BfV).

The World Cup, taking place from June 9 to July 9, will have 32 national teams and will be played out in 12 cities. Already strict security measures are in preparation.

According to Focus magazine, around 300 Muslims from Western Europe have gone to Iraq to fight as insurgents against coalition forces since 2003, when the war started. BfV refuse to confirm or deny their report.

BfV regards Islam as a threat to internal German security.
