Australia: Muslims Seek Second Wives On Internet
It seems that for many Muslims in Australia, the notion of settling down with only one wife is not enough, according to an article on the Herald Sun. The Herald Sun conducted its own investigation and discovered that Muslim men are seeking their extra spouses using claims of financial security as inducements.
So far, the Herald Sun has found 77 men, already married, who were seeking to add an extra wife to their home set-up. Mohammed the "prophet" had 11 wives on the go at one time, after his first wife Khadija died. For less important Muslims, Islam allows a man to have up to four wives, though no Western country allows marriage to more than one wife as being legal. Australia is no exception.
In Victoria, where it is illegal to be rude to a Muslim under the Racial and Religious Tolerance Act 2001, the state's Minister for Women's Affairs, Mary Delahunty, described websites which depicted women as possessions as a disgrace. "Muslim women must be protected by Australian laws," she said.
The sites, such as Muslim Unions.com and Qiran.com, were accessed by a reporter who posed as a Pakistani women looking for marriage, and found some surprising results.
The men were aged from 18 to 60, and promised houses and financial security. However, they insisted on asking for their "brides" to accept the dominance of the husband in a marriage, and to wear a hijab (Muslim headscarf) after the wedding.
One individual said he was already married, but he could "afford to take on a second wife." He claimed: "I have basically registered on to this website in prospects of finding a good obedient, loving housewife. I want my wife to cover her whole body, read Holy Koran and offer the prayers everyday. Be at home."
Another man who said he already had a happy marriage, but said his wife was willing to accept a second wife in the household: "We seek a genuine, practising sister accepting polygamy in its proper context, who is willing to obey the husband . . . I promise to treat my wives fairly."
The Department of Immigration and Multicultural Affairs in Australia received 1909 reports of alleged contrived marriages, which included "second wives", in 2005. This was a 20% increase on figures from 2003 to 2004.
A spokesman from the Islamic Council of Australia said that as Muslims were obliged to follow a country's laws, and as Australia forbade multiple wives, then second wives were forbidden to Muslims. A spokesman from the Department of Immigration and Multicultural Affairs warned that visas could be cancelled and legal action could be taken, which could lead to imprisonment.
