India: Muslim Man Divorces Wife While Sleeping
You can't make this stuff up: You Really Can't
An Indian Muslim man has reportedly been ordered to separate from his wife after saying 'I divorce thee' in his sleep.Aftab Ansari was told to leave Sohela, his wife of 11 years, after he saidtalaq' - the Arabic equivalent of 'I divorce thee' - three times while asleep.
Religious scholars in Jalpaiguri, West Bengal, told the couple to obey orders or face social boycott, reports Asian News International.
The wife must wait a hundred days on her father's home (a muslim woman can't live by herself, the hundred day-wait is to make sure she is not pregnant before re-marrying), marry another man, consumate the marriage, divorce that man, and only then will she be able to re-marry the first man. Also notice that the if she doesn't comply the only penalty would be social ostracism: but that's because she lives in India, a majority Hindu country where Islamic Law does not rule. Were she living in a Muslim-majority country chances are there would be stronger methods of 'persuasion' at the disposal of the Islamic Theocrats.
