Jill Carroll and the Strategy of Jihad
The latest on Jill Carroll's kidnapping and release is now available...
Things that I was forced to say while captive are now being taken by some as an accurate reflection of my personal views. They are not. The people who kidnapped me and murdered Alan Enwiya are criminals, at best. They robbed Alan of his life and devastated his family. They put me, my family and my friends -- and all those around the world, who have prayed so fervently for my release -- through a horrific experience. I was, and remain, deeply angry with the people who did this.
There is no doubt that the people behind her kidnapping, no matter the name they chose for themselves, have long term goals. They understand the value and effects of propaganda. Or is it more likely that they have wised up and revisited past Islamic opinions and jurisprudence on tactics and strategies for jihad? According to 13th century Islamic scholar Shaykh ul-Islaam Taqi-ud-Deen Ahmad ibn Taymiyyah...
As for those who cannot offer resistance or cannot fight, such as women, children, monks, old people, the blind, handicapped and their likes, they shall not be killed, unless they actually fight with words [e.g. by propaganda] and acts [e.g. by spying or otherwise assisting in the warfare].
In effect, a muslim army, no matter how large or small, no matter how aligned, no matter how organized, can classify a journalist an agent of propaganda for the enemy, therefore deserving of death if need be. This is not the same as a soldier whose function in his military is one that of a journalist, for first and foremost he is still a fighting man, an acknowledged and obvious agent of and for the state. Jill Carroll was associated with a news organization with a reputation for fairness and unbiased news reporting. But for a religion and culture that does not believe in the separation of religion and state, that believe the state while it exists it should exists primarily for the purpose of propagating the faith, the erasure of the line between military and civilian should come to no surprise. There should be no illusions about her release. The al-Qaeda training manual is instructive for its "soldiers" on the issue of hostages...
Religious scholars have permitted beating. They use a tradition explained in Imam Mosallem's manuscript, who quotes Thabit Ibn Ans that Allah's prophet - Allah bless and keep him - sought counsel when he was informed about Abou Soufian's arrival. In this tradition, we find permission to interrogate the hostage for the purpose of obtaining information. It is permitted to strike the nonbeliever who has no covenant until he reveals the news, information, and secrets of his people.
The religious scholars have also permitted the killing of a hostage if he insists on withholding information from Moslems. They permitted his killing so that he would not inform his people of what he learned about the Muslim condition, number, and secrets. In the Honein attack, after one of the spies learned about the Muslims kindness and weakness then fled, the prophet - Allah bless and keep him - permitted [shedding] his blood and said, "Find and kill him." Salma Ibn Al-Akwaa followed, caught, and killed him.
The scholars have also permitted the exchange of hostages for money, services, and expertise, as well as secrets of the enemy 's army, plans, and numbers. After the Badr attack, the prophet - Allah bless and keep him - showed favor to some hostages, like the poet Abou Izza, by exchanging most of them for money. The rest were released for providing services and expertise to the Muslims.
Is this really a religion of peace when those who are considered its "extremists" find justifications for their methods so readily available in the traditions and scholarships? Jill Carroll was not a human being but a tool. She was coerced into creating propagandas and her release was part of that program. Her admittance that compliance in that program was out of the need for survival is irrelevant for the Muslim world. As long as what was spoken by her that conformed to their opinions and worldviews, what she may repudiate later can easily be marked off as another "Zionist plot" as so much have been so categorized at the Muslims' convenience. Carroll's translator was less than a tool, he was merely an obstacle and was quickly killed.
