Denmark: Hizb ut-Tahrir Islamist Indicted Again
We have discussed the radical Islamist group Hizb ut-Tahrir, which was founded in Jerusalem in 1953 by an Islamic jurist, Taqiuddin al-Nabhani. This group aims to set up a Caliphate to the replace the last one, that of the Ottomans, which was destroyed by Kemal Ataturk in 1924. A Caliphate is a pan-national authority which does not heed the borders of nation states. Though it claims to be against violence to achieve its aims, Hizb ut-Tahrir is far from peaceful.
In Denmark, the group has been particularly active, and its views are far from mild. This from the BBC:
In March and April 2002, Hizb Ut Tahrir handed out leaflets in a square in Copenhagen, and at a mosque. The leaflet, which also appeared on the Danish groups internet site, makes threats against Jews, using a quote from the Koran urging Muslims to 'kill them wherever you find them, and turn them out from where they have been turned you out.' The leaflet also said, 'The Jews are a people of slander...a treacherous people... they fabricate lies and twist words from their right context.' And the leaflet describes suicide bombings in Israel as "legitimate" acts of "Martyrdom".The person responsible for distributing these leaflets was Fadi Abdullatif (pictured above), Hizb ut-Tahrir's Danish leader. According to Lebanon's Daily Star, in October 2002, Fadi Abdullatif was sentenced to a 60 day suspended jail term for distributing racist propaganda. He had used passages from the Koran to incite violence against Jews.
In August, 2005 Abdullatif was arrested with calling for Muslims to kill members of the Danish government. He distributed leaflets calling for Muslims to go to Fallujah, Iraq, to fight Americans. He urged Muslims to kill leaders of their nations if they dared to obstruct their passage. These leaflets were handed out in 2004.
Now, according to Associated Press via the Guardian, Fadi Abdullatif has been charged with threatening the govrenment for this call to "eliminate your rulers if they stand in your way" , referring to the government who might prevent Muslims from joining the Iraq insurgency.
Deputy Regional Prosecutor Karen-Inger Bast said: "We have now finished looking at the material and decided there are grounds to start formal charges."
There are 530 troops from Denmark stationed in Iraq. Two weeks ago, the Australian government announced that it too was investigating the activities of the Australian branch of Hizb ut-Tahrir for producing similar leaflets. These have urged Muslims to mount an insurrection against coalition troops in Iraq.
