Thailand: Muslim Beheaded By Suspected Muslim Insurgents

Thailand mapA disturbing story from today's Khaleej Times states that in Thailand, in the southern province of Yala, a Muslim rubber-plantation worker has been decapitated.

The head and body of 41-year old Abdulaziz Japakiya were found by villagers earlier today. Thai authorities believe that Abdulaziz was murdered by Muslim insurgents, who often enact dire punishments upon those deemed to be "collaborators" with the government.

Yesterday, Radio Australia reported that an armed Muslim group of 30 people, all dressed in black, stormed a Buddhist village in Pattani province, killing three people.

An elderly Buddhist couple were shot dead, as was their neighbour. One of the bodies was then burned, and the victim's house set ablaze.

According to today's Bangkok Post, two houses were burned in the raid upon the village of Ban Jae-or, in tambon Manangyong in the Yaring district of Pattani. The raid occurred at 4. am local time on Monday.

The elderly couple were Sa-ngiem Kaewprasert, aged 69, and his wife Thanom. His neighbour, Sompit Phittharat, aged 35 was shot, and his mother Pim Phuttharat was injured.

Elderly Sa-ngiem's body was then burned, where it lay at the foot of the stairs. Thanom was still alive when found, but died in hospital.

More than 100 shots were fired into the air by the assailants, stated an 80 year old witness.

Also in Pattani, a Muslim villager was killed in a drive-by shooting. Malading Makeh, aged 25, a villager of tambon Tha Rua in the Khok Pho district was riding his motorbike home on Sunday night when a pillion passenger of another motorbike shot him.

Pattani, Yala and Narathiwat provinces, as well as two districts of Songkhla province, were formerly part of an independent Muslim sultanate called Pattani, which was invaded by Thailand in the late 18th century and formally annexed a century ago. 80% of the population in these parts is still Muslim.

A Muslim-led insurgency began two years ago in January 2004, with the aim of forming an independent Muslim region, and more than 1,200 people have since died in the ensuing violence.
