US: Mohammed Reza Taheri-Azar, Islamic Terrorist
So far in the U.S., the story of the week has been the attempted mass murder of infidels at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. Mohammed Reza Taheri-azar, a recent graduate of the institution, drove his Sports Utility Vehicle onto a crowd of students. As the BBC reports:
An Iranian student has been charged with attempting to murder nine people with a car in the US to "avenge the deaths of Muslims", he told police. Mohammed Reza Taheri-azar, 22, drove a rented Jeep into a crowd at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill on Friday, police said.Mr Taheri-azar, a graduate of the university, then called police to surrender, officers said.
No-one was seriously hurt in the incident, which the FBI is probing.
Mr. Taheri-azar has admitted to staging the attack in order to "avenge the deaths of Muslims around the world."
The authorities, including the FBI, are "reluctant" to call the incident terrorism.
Which brings me to my questions; if this is not an Islamic-inspired terrorist incident, what is?
Sure, the police is affirming Mr. Taheri-azar acted alone. But this only means he is an enterprising individual; by golly, he wanted to kill infidels, and he sure tried. What matters in determining the nature of an attack is not the scale, the effectiveness, or whether there was conspiracy involved. What matter is the motivation of the attackers. The attacker was motivated by Islam, and wished to kill people indiscriminately. If this is not terrorism, nothing is.
