Norway: Mosque Vigilantes In Custody

We reported on Saturday of the fracas which took place on Friday night at a mosque in Gronland distrtict, Oslo, in which an imam, Malik Mohammad Raza, was injured.

Conflicting reports concerned Khalid Mahmood, a local politician, who was involved in the fighting, although he claimed to have been injured. His statement has not been corroborated. He is accused by the imam's supporters of being one of the initiators of the violence.

Today, Norway's Aftenposten reports that today, five people have now been remanded in custody today, in connection with the violence.

Local police chief Kare Stolen said: "The charges are serious. A knife was used during the incident at the mosque and one of the victims has been on a ventilator after the drama."

Six people were injured at the incident at the Markazi Jamaat Ahle Sunnat mosque, which has 6,000 members. Apparently the Pakistani-owned mosque has had internal factions squabbling for some time over the running of the mosque's finances, and several lawsuits have been filed.

There has been conflict at other mosques. Lieutenant Erik Andersen has been trying to settle disputes at five of Oslo's mosques for the past two years, including the Markazi Jamaat Ahle Sunnat mosque.
