Hamas Summit in Moscow a Failure

Russian spin doctors earned their pay this weekend by working overtime to portray the Hamas visit to Moscow as a success. But if we get to the bare bones, the summit with Palestinian terrorists on center stage, was a failure. Hamas, the Palestinian terrorist organization that recently won the unanimous support of the Palestinian people in national elections, refused to renounce violence or recognize the state of Israel. Russian President Vladimir Putin invited the terrorist organization to Moscow hoping to bolster the image of his country in the eyes of the Muslim world, and hoping he could negotiate a breakthrough in the Palestinian confrontation with Israel.

Hamas, showed the true extent of its cunning, even selling out its brothers-in-Islam, the Chechens, by calling Russia's war against Chechen militants, ``an internal Russian affair.''

"They have put the interests of the Russian government above that of religious solidarity with Chechen Muslims," complained Akhmed Zakayev, the Chechen envoy in London, as reported by the Moscow Times.

Putin, who has long called for the world community not to negotiate with Chechen terrorists, said that he didn't think inviting Hamas would damage Israeli interests. The Palestinians said peace is contingent on Israel's readiness to withdraw from all territories occupied in 1967, the return of Palestinian refugees, the closure of settlements, the dismantling of the dividing wall, and the release of all prisoners.
