Russia's Chechnya on its way to Islamic Rule

Ramzan Kadyrov, 29, the heavy-handed leader of the Russian Republic of Chechnya in the North Caucasus region, is ``running a vigorous Islamic campaign'' in his republic, reports Agence France Press. Last year, he outlawed gambling, a few months ago he called for legalizing polygamy, he is offering money to women who will wear headscarves, and he wants to see more media coverage of Islam. He is also cracking down on alcoholic beverages, and plans to build a massive mosque in the center of Grozny, the Chechen capital.

Kadyrov, who has the strong support of Russian President Vladimir Putin, is already a feared and reviled figure among his own people, and his bodyguards are known to act as an organized crime group that has been implicated in many murders, torture, and extortion. All this, of course, is in the true spirit of the Koran, and makes Kadyrov an excellent role model for young Muslims.

One reason behind these policies is to steal the thunder from the Chechen rebels who want to establish an Islamic state and secede from Russia.

Russia has been fighting the rebels since 1994. Chechnya declared independence from Moscow in 1991, but only in December 1994 did Moscow respond militarily to stop the Chechen ethnic-cleansing against the non-Muslim population.
