Indonesia: Islamists Ratchet Up Anti-US Protests

Earlier today, thousands of Muslims staged a protest outside the US Embassy in Jakarta, states Wanadoo News and Reuters via ABC News.

A fortnight ago, we reported on the violent protests outside the US embassy, led by the Front Pembela Islam (Islamic Defenders Front) an extremist group which in 2001 had a bitter anti-US campaign in the nation.

The exact reasons for the demonstration today appeared to be more about Islamic hatred for Western values than about any specific point. Protesters were led in the demonstrations by Hizb ut-Tahrir, an international organisation which seeks to establish a Caliphate. In Bangladesh, massive anti-Western protests were made by this group last month, ostensibly protesting about the Danish cartoons.

In Indonesia, Hizb ut-Tahrir, like the Front Pembela Islam, has been active in closing down Christian churches.

The Indonesian media claimed that Hizb ut-Tahrir also organised seven other anti-US demonstrations at other locations, in addition to the Jakarta US Embassy protest. Only one of these had a large attendance of more than 1,000.

5,000 people marched by the embassy, while a battalion of 1,000 police officers ensured they were kept away from the building and on the other side of the street.

The protesters called for the establishment of sharia law, condemning the Danish cartoons and also arguing against Exxon Mobil, the US conglomerate, from operating an Indonesian oil field.

The protests were apparently staged to mark the ending of the last Caliphate, that of the Ottomans, which was abolished by Kemal Attaturk in 1924.

In Britain, Prime Minister Tony Blair is attempting to have Hizb ut-Tahrir banned, despite the attempts of left-leaning and pug-ugly pugilist Clare Short to embrace them. Treacherous MP Short even invited their representatives into Parliament, despite Hizb ut-Tahrir's proclaimed opposition to voting, democracy and the UK Parliament.
