Spain: Suspected Islamist Arrested In Malaga
We have reported on the arrests made in Spain's Costa del Sol, which took place in December last year. On December 9, seven Algerians with links to the Salafist Group for Preaching and Combat (GSPC) were arrested. These arrests followed on from raids throughout southern Spain on November 23, when 11 suspected members of this group were arrested. An Algerian suspected Islamist was arrested in Alicante on December 16 as he tried to flee the country.
More suspected members of GSPC were arrested in Lerida, Malaga, Nerja, Seville and on the Balearic islands on December 19, and on January 3 this year, a Moroccan man was arrested in Torremolinos, on the Costa del Sol.
Today, according to Focus-Fen, the blog Malaga and Reuters AlertNet, another man suspected of being an Islamist has been arrested earlier in the day at Malaga on the Costa del Sol.
Chafik Jalal, aged 44, is of Tunisian origin. He was found in the possession of two fake French identity cards and a forged French driving licence.
Jalal was linked to the Salafist group's Iraqi leader Abu Sufian, who was a senior member of a mosque in Malaga, the centre of police investigations. A statement from the Spanish Interior Ministry announced that Jalal provided false passports to recruits who were to go to Iraq, Chechnya or Kashmir to fight as insurgents.
On Christmas Eve, six of the sixteen individuals who had been arrested on Monday 16 December were jailed, awaiting trial.
In a separate inquiry into the actions of Islamists responsible for a suicide attack in Nassiriya, Iraq in 2003, twenty people were arrested on January 10 in Madrid, Catalunya and the Basque territory.
