France: Murder of Jewish Man By Muslim Gang - 3 Await Charges

leaderDetails are starting to emerge of the horrific killing of a young Jewish man. Both Yahoo (in French) and YNET News (in English) describe how a 23 year old Parisian Jew was found naked, tied to a tree, with burns and cuts over 80% of his body, on Monday 13th Fenruary, in the region near the station of Sainte-Genevieve-des-Bois, in the suburb of Essonne, Ile de la Cite. The man, Ilan Halimi. died on the way to hospital.

Ilan had met a good-looking woman who came to the cellular phone shop where he worked. They swapped telephone numbers, and after a few conversations they arranged a rendezvous on January 20.

Subsequently, Ilan's family were contacted, with a demand made of them for 400,000 Euros, equivalent to $476,000 US. The family could not accumulate the sum required, and the kidnappers reduced the ransom to 5,000 Euros ($6,000). The kidnappers quoted verses from the Koran to the family, and said they should raise money from the synagogue, hinting at an antisemitic motive for the kidnapping. Contact with the family then abruptly ceased, a week and a half ago.

This weekend, three people have been arrested and placed "under examinaion", a French legal term meaning pre-indictment, with two believed to have acted as lures for a Muslim gang.

The French newspaper Le Figaro reported today that Audrey Lorleach, aged 24, and Almane Diallo, aged 32, were placed in detention yesterday. As of Sunday evening, the leader of the gang (pictured above) is still on the loose.

The third suspect "under examination", 24-year old Murielle Izouard, has been imprisoned, and is due to meet a juge (a legal attorney/judge) on Wednesday. Audrey Lorleach, a blonde, was used as a honeytrap by the kidnappers, and Almane Diallo, a pawnbroker who is suspected of acting as an intermediary for the gang, have been put under interrogation on suspicion of "association with criminals with a view to commit kidnap, extortion, and acts of torture, barbarity and homicide."

Audrey Lorleach is additionally put under examination for "complicity in kidnapping, and not reporting of a crime".

Her friend, Murielle Izouard was set under examination for "non-denunciation of a crime", with the juge estimating that Ilan would still be alive, had she reported the kidnapping.

Feelings about the case are, understandably, running high, particularly amongst Paris' Jewish community. The vehicle of a driver who found himself in the middle of a memorial cortege in Paris in memory of Ilan Halimi, had its windows smashed by several dozen of the procession earlier today.

The procession, arranged by Jewish group B'nai Brith, had arranged the memorial march to leave la Republique at 5 pm. The event was attended by hundreds of individuals, headed for la Nation.

At Ilan's funeral on Friday, some 500 people paid their respects in the Jewish cemetery of Pantin.

"All avenues are being explored, we are searching everywhere" stated a police spokesperson, regarding the hunt for the 26-year old leader of the gang, whose face we show above. His real name is Youssef Fofana, who gave himself the English nickname, "Leader of the barbarians".

Since Thursday, around 15 suspects have been arrested, of which 14 were apprehended in France, the majority from the city of Tertre de Bagneux, in Hauts-de-Seine, and another was taken in Brussels, Belgium.

The deputy of the gang and the "lure", a young woman of north African origin who had been involved in Ilan's ambush, are also being hunted.
