UK: Forty Per Cent Of Muslims Want Sharia Law in Britain

Sadiq KhanThe results of an opinion poll carried out by ICM, and reported in the Sunday Telegraph, in Manchester Online and other sites, reveals a disturbing picture of Muslims' perceptions of life in Britain.

Last week we described details of a YouGov poll into attitudes towards Muslims and Muslim extremism. That poll found that, among 1,600 respondents, 67% felt that relations between the Muslim and non-Muslim communities will worsen.

The ICM poll, conducted from a base of 500 Muslims, found that followers of Islam similarly view a worsening of relations. Exactly half stated that relations between "white Britons" and Muslims were worsening. Less than 20% felt things were getting better between Muslims and "kaffirs".

Though 99% of respondents claimed that the four Islamists who killed 52 people on 7th July last year on London Transport were wrong to have committed such an act, 20% still felt they had sympathy with the bombers' "feelings and motives." 75% denied any sympathy with the assailants' mindset.

What is perhaps the greatest surprise is that 40% wished to see sharia law introduced into parts of Britain. 41% opposed the introduction of sharia.

Sadiq Khan (pictured) is Labour MP for Tooting, southwest London, and was one of the members of an official taskforce set up after the bombings of 7/7.

He described the poll results as "alarming". He stated: "Vast numbers of Muslims feel disengaged and alienated from mainstream British society."

"We must redouble our efforts to bring Muslims on board with the mainstream community. For all the efforts made since last July, things do not have appear to have got better."

Sir Iqbal Sacranie, the antisemitic and homophobic secretary general of the Muslim Council for Britain, put his own spin on the results. Sacranie, who supports terrorists such as the founder of Hamas, Sheikh Yassin, and wanted to invite Osama bin laden to Britain in 1996, pointed out that "This poll confirms the widespread opposition among British Muslims to the so-called war on terror."

He does not appear to have made comments on the other, truly disturbing, aspects of the poll findings, such as four out of ten Muslims desiring sharia.

The Conservative MP, and shadow home secretary David Davis noted that the battle of ideas in parts of the Muslim community had "a long way to go". He said that "it is absolutely vital that we reinforce the voice of moderate Islam wherever possible."

Charles Clarke also made a statement to the effect that all faiths should feel they belong in UK society. "Today's survey indicates we still have a long way to go... [but] we are committed to working with all faiths to ensure we achieve that end," he said.
